1. some of the tools i used were the pottery wheel, hot glue gun, and a ribbon tool. the pottery wheel helped me a lot with my pouring vessel project. I used the wheel to make all 3 cups and the vessel itself. it was very fun to use but also difficult to get the hang of. centering is very hard. the hot glue gun helped me with the wearable art project, the repitition project, and the object to art project. I learned that hot glue guns have multiple uses. you can use it to glue things together but also to make holes. the ribbon tool helped me a lot in my surrealism project. I used different sizes of tools to sculpt different parts of the cat’s body and different details on the cat. 2. my knowledge of the pottery wheel changed since the beginning of the semester because i used it a lot more than i ever had. I used it once in sculpture 1 but i barely made a cup. i used a lot more tools than i ever have especially in the surrealism project because i tried really hard to do anything i could to make the cat look as real as possible. Which project was your most successful? Describe the theme and or topic and the process you went through to complete the project. my most successful project was object to art. I made an elephant out of an old clock. my process was I used cardboard to cut out the shape of ears and build a foundation for the trunk. I used an empty aluminum foil roll to make the tusks. After I had all my pieces together, I glued the tusks and the ears to the clock using hot glue. I paper mache’d the outside of the trunk, the tusks, and the ears with newspaper. After that dried, I started painting the ears, the trunk and the outside of the clock gray, and I painted the tusks white. I added dark gray details to the ears and the trunk and painted on nostrils. Then, I used a glass etcher to be able to glue my trunk to the glass of the clock face. Which project was your least successful? Explain why you consider this work of art unsuccessful? If you were to create this project over, what changes would you make? my least successful project was my underglaze project. I had to finish it very quickly so i tried to go fast and ended up breaking my plate 3 times. i got very stressed towards the end and it came out messy. There was a crack in the plate and the colors didn’t come out like i hoped. If i were to do this again, I would take more time on it and be more careful. Choose a place or artwork where the subject matter reflects you as an artist. One that you have a personal connection to. Please explain.
I have a personal connection to my surrealism project. I made my boyfriends cat, Pepper. Pepper was very important to him. He got her when he was 4 years old so she had been in his life through everything. When he felt like he had nobody, he always had Pepper. A few weeks ago, Pepper had been diagnosed with cancer and they said she had a month to live. They had to put her down last week and he felt lost without her. I decided to make this project in tribute to the angel that Pepper was.

pros
- rolling magazines is easy cons - we had to connect the rolls with packing tape instead of hot glue because hot glue took too long and the packing tape is kind of tacky process: we spent a week rolling 150 pieces of paper and then started gluing them together. we realized the hot glue takes forever so we decided to use packing tape instead. we spent 3 days taping each layer together and then taping the 3 big triangles out of little triangles together. the piece ended up being about 4.5 feet tall. pros
- the wheel is very fun to use and it is satisfying cons - i am not very good at the wheel process i had a hard time starting my pouring vessel and cups on the wheel. it took me a lot of trial and error because i kept breaking my pieces and making them too small. when i finally got one that was close to what i wanted, i tried to keep it together and as nice as i could to not break it. i made a small ring in the middle and made a tip to pour out of. when i made my cups, none of them were the same size but i scraped them down so they looked mostly the same. I smoothed everything out with a spoon so it felt smooth on the outside. When i glazed it, i used the glazes with glass pieces in each color i used. i used two colors on the front and one in the inside. pros:
- i think the face of the cat came out very well cons - the body doesn’t look very real and accurate - the glaze caused some problems - the wings wouldn’t stay in process first, i took a chunk of clay and sculpted the body. i cut legs out and sculpted the back legs and thighs. I then created a round head to score and slip it to the body i had already created. then, I started adding clay to the face to make a nose shape and i pressed into the face to make eye sockets. I drew on closed eyes and a nose and a mouth. after that, i shaped wire into a wing shape and put holes in the back of the cat to put the wings into. then, I scratched a P into the front of the cat’s chest because her name is Pepper. I put on a clear glaze and when it came out of the kiln, there were bumps on it’s back and all over it and there were weird spots of color. The wings wouldn’t stay up when I put them in so I hot glued them. pros:
- the process was pretty quick. it only took one day to burn the holes and two days to tie everything together. cons: - i used plastic spoons and burning plastic smells awful. - some of the holes didn’t come out the same size so i had to scrape them with scissors. process: I started by using an empty hot glue gun to burn a hole on both ends of the spoons. I then tied the spoons together with twine string in a pattern that holds together as a cape. I made a cape and a necklace to wear with my spoon crown from last quarter to create an outfit for the wearable sculpture modeling in the art show. this week mary and i finished our rolled paper project. it is a pyramid out of triangles of magazine rolls
this week i finished the detailing on my cat and added metal wings. i am now waiting for it to be fired. i also made a cape out of spoons by burning holes in them and tying them together.
This week I worked on my surrealism project which is a cat with wings in tribute to my boyfriends cat that passed away from cancer. I made the body and started shaping the face.
