In progress sgraffitoIn progress - before firing1. I got my idea by trying to redo my tripod cup idea. My idea for the tripod cup was a dinosaur but it ended up getting broken and part of it not being put on all together. I thought it would be cool to try and avenge him. 2. So far, I made a box out of slabs and used ribs to straighten out the sides. Then I waited a few days for the clay to harden and I painted it with black underglaze. Then I waited some more and finally started to carve my design. I used a small ribbon tool to carve the dinosaur and the background. Then finished it off with a coat of clear glaze. Finished PieceMy process was slab. I rolled out slabs of clay and cut them to fit to make a box. I used a metal rib to straighten out the sides and then I waited for the clay to dry a little bit before putting on a few coats of black underglaze. Then I waited for it to dry some more before taking a small ribbon tool to carve out my design. Then the piece was fired. Then I put on a layer of clear glaze and fired the piece again. This is my final product. (The picture is missing right now because it wasn’t finished firing yet)
I thought the sgraffito process was pretty cool. I liked the carving part and I would do it again if I was able to I thought the design was successful. I like the separation I put between the palm tree and the dinosaur’s back to show they were different objects. If I were to do it again I would straighten out the sides a little bit more because they’re a tiny bit lopsided.
