In progress sgraffitoIn progress - before firing1. I got my idea by trying to redo my tripod cup idea. My idea for the tripod cup was a dinosaur but it ended up getting broken and part of it not being put on all together. I thought it would be cool to try and avenge him. 2. So far, I made a box out of slabs and used ribs to straighten out the sides. Then I waited a few days for the clay to harden and I painted it with black underglaze. Then I waited some more and finally started to carve my design. I used a small ribbon tool to carve the dinosaur and the background. Then finished it off with a coat of clear glaze. Finished PieceMy process was slab. I rolled out slabs of clay and cut them to fit to make a box. I used a metal rib to straighten out the sides and then I waited for the clay to dry a little bit before putting on a few coats of black underglaze. Then I waited for it to dry some more before taking a small ribbon tool to carve out my design. Then the piece was fired. Then I put on a layer of clear glaze and fired the piece again. This is my final product. (The picture is missing right now because it wasn’t finished firing yet)
I thought the sgraffito process was pretty cool. I liked the carving part and I would do it again if I was able to I thought the design was successful. I like the separation I put between the palm tree and the dinosaur’s back to show they were different objects. If I were to do it again I would straighten out the sides a little bit more because they’re a tiny bit lopsided. My inspired artist is Lucy Sparrow. Lucy Sparrow is British and the materials she works with are felt and paint. Lucy Sparrow's newest project is called "8 'til late" and it's a temporary installation designed to look like a corner store with every product you could imagine made of felt and paint. This is her website. http://www.sewyoursoul.co.uk/home/ What makes Lucy Sparrow's work inspiring to me is the fact that each piece takes so much time to make. She has to design it, cut the felt and stitch the pieces together. She didn't only make one piece, she made 31 thousand pieces, enough to fill a small supermarket for her corner store project. The level of detail in each one is also crazy to me. She included every logo, slogan, and design on the packaging perfectly. From far away, I might even think I'm looking at the actual product. I'm drawn in because I can't imagine how much time and effort she put into making these pieces and I think it's so cool that she took the time to make so many of them so she could fill an entire store.
